I'm Dawn, the founder of Tagliaferro Ceramics. Thank you for visiting. I'd like to introduce myself and let you know a little about how and why I started this business.
I've been working in clay since I was 14 years old, after falling in love with the material in high school. It has been a long journey with many different steps along the way to crafting my business. I've used all of those steps to build on my knowledge and understanding of the material I work with and my life experience to build a long standing business I can be proud of.
Tagliaferro is named after my maternal grandfather. After a tumultuous childhood, my grandparents took me in and there provided me the safety and stability needed to thrive. For that, I am eternally grateful and this name is a way to honor their sacrifice.
Since the moment I put my hands in clay, I knew I was connected to this material. After a couple of years in college without a clear direction, I took another ceramics class. It was there that I remembered how much I loved it. It became clear that this was where I belonged and I pursued my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the University of Arizona.
When I graduated, having the knowledge that I did not have the most lucrative degree, I made a promise to myself to find a way to make a living from it. After various teaching positions, art festivals and private commissions, I decided to take the risk of defining the business I wanted to create in 2016.
I rented a store front with my life partner, Mark. We repainted it, created shelving and display material and we set up shop in Ashland, OR. His natural edge, rustic serving and cutting boards were a natural compliment to my organic, hand built dinner and serving ware. I also carved out a spot on Etsy and began developing a website. It's been 4 1/2 years since I took that leap of faith and I am happy to report that this business I started in my garage is now serving beautiful ceramics and lots of love to personal clients, chefs, photographers and boutiques around the world.
